A man is suing the maker and seller of a grinder blade that allegedly shattered and caused him injury in 2014.

Vernon T. Smith Jr. filed a complaint July 23 in Madison County Circuit Court against Illinois Industrial Tool Inc. and Farm and Home Supply Inc.

On Jan. 26, 2014, Smith was working in his home, using a grinder blade that was made or sold by the defendants, the lawsuit states, when the blade allegedly shattered into pieces, causing him to suffer injuries to his face and eye, pain and suffering, and medical expenses.

The defendants are cited with making or selling a dangerous or defective product, failing to provide warnings of the product's ability to "fail, explode and shatter into pieces," sold a dangerous product, and failing to make a blade that wouldn't fail and become dangerous.

The plaintiff, citing medical expenses of $114,530, seeks damages of more than $250,000, plus costs.

The plaintiff is represented by Rodney D. Caffey of the Caffey Law Firm LLC in Godfrey.

Madison County Circuit Court case number 15L926.
