EDWARDSVILLE – A longtime employee of the Madison County Treasurer’s office has retired after 40 years with the office.
“We had a wonderful retirement party for Mindy, and I’m very proud of my staff. A 40th year anniversary doesn’t happen every day, and it was very special,” Treasurer Kurt Prenzler said.
Mindy Ramey started working for the County Treasurer in 1973 and has worked under seven county treasurers, trained for the office’s first computers and came in contact with thousands of citizens. During
her tenure, Ramey has worked as an assistant cashier and as an
accounting clerk, handling deposits, keying in financial and account
information, and balancing daily accounts with the auditor’s office.
After graduating from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in December 1973 with a degree in physical education, she found finding a teaching position difficult. Ramey’s then-boyfriend was stationed in Panama with the U.S. Army, and while frequently traveling to see him, she took on part-time jobs as a substitute teacher and in the County Treasurer’s office.
In 1975, she was offered a full-time position with County Treasurer George Mullins.
“It’s hard to believe it was that long ago when I started,” Ramey said. “I started at $400 gross a month. That was quite a bit back then.”
She plans to fill her newfound free time with her close family. Ramey and her husband, Michael, have two daughters and five grandchildren.
“Spending time with them will be my No. 1 priority,” Ramey said.
The county will recognize Ramey’s lengthy service during its October board meeting.
Prenzler named Bethany Behrhorst as Ramey’s replacement.
